H.P. Lovecraft, "The White Ship"
The project concerns our efforts to identify and document the wreck of a sailing vessel off the southern coast of Evia. The position has been given to us a few years back in 2008, however the first dive was not made until July 2014. The wreck lies at a depth of 102 meters
Wrecks that will be presented under the heading of 'Various' are wrecks that we have occasionally dived all over Greece. They are either not concentrated in any particular area or were not the object of a dedicated full blown project. Some of these remain ongoing concerns.
During July 2014 we made an introductory dive at a position off Karystos bay, southern Evia at a depth of 102 meters. We were somewhat surprised to see that the wreck was that of a sailing vessel of about 35 meters length with two masts. The wreck is almost intact and sitting upright at a general ESE-WNW axis. The wreck of a sailing ship in such condition is somewhat of a rarity in Greek waters, in fact it is the only one our team has ever visited. That is the reason why, although at a great depth and in an area with frequent adverse weather conditions and strong currents, it does warrant our continuing involvement.
That said, documentary research is yet to begin and the ship's age and identity are yet to be ascertained. If of an older age it could prove a hard nut to crack and therefore we can only wish for a succesfull outcome!
