H.P. Lovecraft, "The White Ship"
The project which started in February 2014 concerns a previously undived and unidentified shipwreck off the east coast of Attiki in the vicinity of Porto Rafti. Its exploration will be a demanding endeavor, as despite the proximity to our base the ship rests at 124 meters of water, a depth which admittedly puts a strain on our operational capabilities. On another note the project is our first to have the support of the Hellenic Navy History Directory.
Wrecks that will be presented under the heading of 'Various' are wrecks that we have occasionally dived all over Greece. They are either not concentrated in any particular area or were not the object of a dedicated full blown project. Some of these remain ongoing concerns.
A single introductory dive has been made up to the present day at the wreck in question. She rests in about 124 meters and in a rough north to south direction. Measured by echo sounder her length is little over 100 meters. A sight rarely encountered in our diving over the years, she is capsized. Due to the limited bottom time, we managed to scooter only the bow area.
As far as her identification is concerned, we must point out that the location of the wreck closely matches the reported sinking location of the Italian steamer Delfin which was torpedoed by the British submarine HMS Taku on the 14th of December, 1942. The size and built characteristics of the wreck observed so far also concur to the Delfin hypothesis. Further dives, especially in the stern area and the deeper parts of the wreck are in the agenda. Documentary research is also ongoing.
